The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested an Assistant Chief based in Sitikho Sub-Location, Webuye West Sub-County, Bungoma County for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Ksh.10,000 from a bereaved family in order to process their land succession documents.
John Murutu was apprehended while receiving the said amount after the family filed a complaint with the EACC.
Mr. Murutu was then escorted to EACC’s county offices for processing before being charged with two counts of receiving a bribe in violation of Section 6(1)(a) of the Bribery Act in Bungoma Chief Magistrate’s Court.
Confirming the arrest, EACC Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications Eric Ngumbi stated that the commission will continue to be vigilant in weeding out rogue county administrators who exploit members of the public in exchange for providing services to them.
The arrest comes two weeks after a Roysambu Assistant County Commissioner was arrested together with her assistant for demanding Ksh.50,000 from a Mathare Slum resident to return construction materials that were confiscated from him after his stall was demolished.
The two were released on bond pending further investigations.
