First Lady Rachel Ruto has encouraged able families to adopt orphaned and vulnerable children instead of having them in children’s homes.

Speaking after visiting Mji Wa Salama Children’s Home in Mombasa, Rachel said that families offer an ideal environment for the growth of children.

“I encourage able families to consider adopting children, as a family environment is critical to the proper development of a child,” she said.

“This is in line with the recent directive by the government that favours absorption into families as opposed to children’s homes, where unscrupulous operators have been a conduit for trafficking,” she asserted.

Rachel, who also visited Alms House, a home for the elderly, emphasized the need to show love to the needy, especially during the end-year festivities.

“As we near the end-of-year festivities, let us share some of the blessings that God has given us with needy families and vulnerable children,” she advised.

Rachel Ruto’s donations

At the Mji Wa Salama Children, an initiative of the Child Welfare Society of Kenya, Rachel donated foodstuffs and urged other Kenyans of goodwill to donate foodstuffs to needy families and vulnerable children.

The Mombasa County Government-run Alms House also received additional donations of food from the First Lady.

The First Lady also praised the efforts by the Kenya Child Welfare Society of Kenya, under the tutelage of its Chief Executive Officer, Irene Mureithi, to sponsor a bill in parliament aimed at curbing the misuse of the adoption process of children.
