The Intergovernmental Authority Development has appointed two more women to top positions a day after it picked a Kenyan to head its communication unit.
The organization announced the appointment of Victoria Anib from South Sudan as the head of social development and Ayan Mahamoud (Djibouti) to be in charge of partnership and resource mobilization.
The appointment of the duo, IGAD says, is in line with its vision to empower women.
“We are glad to announce the addition of two professionals to our team, furthering our commitment to inclusivity and empowering women in key roles,” reads the statement.
“With her expertise, Anib is expected to help the organization in providing impactful solutions to the region’s social development challenges.”
Anib holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Ahfad University for Women in Sudan.
On her part, Mohamoud brings a wealth of experience in fostering collaborations and mobilizing resources for sustainable development.
“We believe that her strategic vision and passion for driving positive change will strengthen our partnerships and amplify our impact,” IGAD said.
According to her LinkedIn page, she has been managing the USAID program portfolio at IGAD dealing with issues related to resilience, climate adaptation, dry land development, cross-border health, countering violent extremism, conflict prevention and early warning.
Kenya’s Patience Nyange was on Monday was picked to work in the Office of the Executive Secretary of IGAD Workneh Gebeyehu as a spokesperson.
Before joining IGAD, Nyange worked as the Executive Director of the Association of Media Women in Kenya.
The authority said it tapped into Nyange’s expertise in the field of communication to boost its voice across the world.
“With her many years of experience, expertise, and passion for effective communication, we are poised to elevate our voice and mission not only in the region but globally. Welcome aboard, we wish you all the best in your journey with us,” IGAD said on X.
Nyange left AMWIK in January 2024.
According to her LinkedIn page, she has previously served as a Board Member of the Media Council of Kenya, assistant director at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and as a Communication advisor at the Ministry of Devolution and Planning.
Nyange has also been an Associate Broadcast mentor with BBC Media Action, a Journalist with the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), as well as a presenter and producer at Baraka FM.
IGAD was created in 1996 to supersede the Intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Development (IGADD) which was founded in 1986.
It has eight member states which are Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia, the Sudan, South Sudan and Uganda.
Its main mission is to assist and complement the efforts of the Member States to achieve, through increased cooperation security and environmental protection, peace and security, and economic cooperation and integration in the region.
