An M-Pesa shop operator and a boda boda rider are nursing injuries after they were stabbed in a robbery attempt in Kericho town on Thursday night.
According to eyewitnesses, an armed robber masquerading as a customer entered one of the M-Pesa shops opposite Shivling Supermarket in Kericho town and attempted to rob the agent of her money.
The man, who was suspected to be behind the spate of M-Pesa agent attacks in the town, stabbed the agent in her hand before attempting to grab a handbag which the attendant was carrying after the day’s work.
A struggle ensued as the agent clung to her bag, raising an alarm that drew the attention of nearby members of the public, including boda boda operators.
Responding swiftly, the operators pursued the suspect. One managed to catch up, but as he attempted to subdue the assailant, the thug drew a knife and stabbed him in his hands.
The situation escalated as other boda boda riders joined in, confronting the criminal with whatever crude weapons they could lay hands on.
Police officers patrolling the area were alerted to the commotion and rushed to the scene, rescuing the assailant from the mob.
Subsequently, the injured perpetrator was apprehended and taken into custody at Kericho Police Station.
