Nairobi County is bracing for limited water supply in certain estates, even amid heavy rainfall nationwide.
The Nairobi Water Company attributes this situation to flooded pipelines, hindering water distribution to affected areas. To address this, the company will implement rationing under the Equitable Water Distribution Program, ensuring each customer receives water once a week. Despite the ongoing heavy rains, the Water and Sewerage Company plans to enforce water rationing in the capital.
Managing Director Nahason Muguna stated that although dams supplying water are overflowing, the production capacity of existing water infrastructure cannot be surpassed.
” Nairobi City County has four sources of water, namely Kikuyu Springs, Ruiru, Sasumua, and Thika dams. The water is treated in Ngethu, Sasumua, Kabete Water Treatment Works and Kikuyu springs,” the statement read in part. “The four have an installed daily production totaling 525.6 million liters per day against a daily demand of 900 million litres.
Muguna explained that water rationing will occur under the Equitable Water Distribution Program, guaranteeing each customer receives water once a week. He also noted that heavy rainfall and flooding have damaged supply pipelines, resulting in low water pressure in specific city areas.
Which areas will experience water rationing?
Affected areas within Nairobi include Kenyatta University, Kahawa Barracks, Chieko in Kasarani, Kamiti road near Jacaranda, Cotton Road, and Dennis Pritt Road in Kilimani. Similarly, Wangapala and Iregi roads in Parklands, as well as Brookside Groove in Westlands, will be affected.
Additionally, areas such as Ngomongo, Korogocho, Matopeni-Kayole, Kwa Ndege, Lower Plot 10, Lexo, Kware Road area, Tassia, Avenue Park 1 & 2 Estates, Nyayo Embakasi Estate, Tumaini Estate, Infinity Estate on Kangundo road, and Fedha 1 Estate will also experience water rationing.

Water supply to ten estates in Eastlands, Nairobi, will be disrupted for several days due to a critical pipeline being swept away by floods, Nairobi Water announced on Friday, May 3.
The affected estates include Tassia, Nyayo Estate, Embakasi Village, Park Estate 1 and 2, Pipeline, Plot 10 Estates, Embakasi Jua Kali, and surrounding areas.
