Kibra Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Orero has expressed support for Azimio la Umoja leaders who chose not to attend the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, May 30, 2024.

During an interview with K24 TV on Friday, May 31, 2024, Orero emphasized that Azimio leaders were not obligated to participate in the prayer breakfast held at Safari Park Hotel.

He further highlighted that the Freedom of Worship is a fundamental right enshrined in the constitution, which informed the opposition’s decision to abstain from the event.

“First we have freedom of worship and we have freedom of speech. That means that you must not pray where the President is to say it is a national prayer day.

“It should not be an issue that we don’t attend the National Prayer Day. We can pray where we are,” Orero insisted.

The National Prayer Breakfast saw the participation of prominent leaders, including President William Ruto, Deputy Rigathi Gachagua, Cabinet Secretaries, Speakers of both houses, MPs, and Senators.

Despite the high-profile attendance, Orero, who had previously announced his decision not to attend such gatherings, demanded accountability from the event organizers.

He called for transparency regarding the financial resources utilized to fund the National Prayer Breakfast.

“When we talk about austerity measures, we would wish to know as a country, how much did we save and how much did we spend,” Orero remarked.

Instead of hosting the National Prayer Breakfast at luxurious hotels, Orero challenged leaders to advocate hosting the event at their churches which he argued was more economical.

“We should not be tied that everybody must attend the National Prayer Day. I have never attended any National Prayer Day and I don’t think I will ever attend,” Orero retorted.
