Rising water levels in Lake Naivasha have forced residents of neighboring estates to vacate their homes. Kihoto is the most affected area, with numerous boreholes and latrines flooded, raising concerns about a potential disease outbreak.
This estate, home to many flower farm workers, is facing significant health risks due to the flooding.
Wildlife, including buffaloes and hippos, have also been severely impacted, as the flooding of pasturelands around the riparian zone has driven them to nearby farms in search of food. Tragically, one person drowned in the estate after falling into a flooded borehole, prompting residents to call on the government for assistance.
Lakeview MCA Alex Mbugua highlighted the worsening situation, noting that the number of affected residents is increasing with no aid from the national government.
He emphasized that the county government is overwhelmed and fears a disease outbreak due to the flooded latrines. Mbugua called for national government support, pointing out that several schools have been closed, one person has died, and there is no clean water supply.
Viwandani MCA Mwangi Muraya echoed these concerns, stating that displaced wildlife has encroached on nearby estates. He mentioned that the county has provided water treatment drugs but stressed the need for more funds and support for affected families.
Resident Michael Wainaina noted that this is the second time the estate has experienced flooding, affecting numerous landowners. Another victim, Samson Otieno, explained that they have been forced to stay in the flooded houses as they cannot afford rent elsewhere due to the harsh economic conditions.
