RwandAir anticipates that Qatar Airways will finalize its purchase of a significant stake in the central African country’s carrier as early as next month, according to chief executive Yvonne Makolo in a statement to the Financial Times.

The negotiations between Qatar and Rwanda have been ongoing for nearly five years, with discussions centering on Qatar Airways acquiring a 49% stake in RwandAir for an undisclosed amount, as reported by the FT.

Both Qatar Airways and RwandAir have yet to respond to requests for comment outside of regular business hours.

Earlier this year, Qatar Airways CEO Badr Mohammed Al Meer hinted at an upcoming investment in an airline in southern Africa.

Qatar Airways has already made significant investments in the region, including a 60% stake in a new $1.3 billion international airport being constructed in Rwanda. Additionally, Qatar Airways has established code share agreements with several African airlines, including RwandAir.
