YouTube announced on Monday that it will introduce a new feature called “notes,” allowing users to add context to videos.
Initially launching in the United States, this feature will enable certain users and creators to write notes intended to offer relevant and easy-to-understand context for viewers.
For example, notes could clarify if a song is a parody, highlight the availability of a new version of a product being reviewed, or correct any instances of older footage being mistaken for current events.
This feature mirrors a similar functionality on X, known as Community Notes, which allows select contributors to add context to posts by using tags such as “misleading” or “out of context.”
Initially, the notes feature on YouTube will only be available on mobile devices to users in the U.S. and will be in English. During this phase, third-party evaluators will assess the helpfulness of the notes to train the systems, potentially paving the way for a broader rollout in the future.
