Some 512 detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were promoted to the ranks of Corporals and Sergeants on Friday, June 28, following the successful completion of a rigorous four-month training at the Magadi Field Campus. The graduation ceremony was overseen by DCI Director Mohamed Amin. Among the promoted officers, 360 were elevated from police constables to corporals, while 152 corporals advanced to the rank of police sergeants.
The intensive training, which began 17 weeks ago, aimed to enhance the quality and standards of investigative work among the officers, equipping them with essential skills for their new leadership roles. Director Amin congratulated the graduates and emphasized that promotions come with increased responsibilities and accountability. He urged them to provide high-quality services to the public, maintaining decorum and upholding the rule of law.
Director Amin also expressed gratitude to Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome for supporting the DCI’s ability to train and promote its own officers. This approach, he noted, allowed the Directorate to focus on crucial training aspects tailored to the daily duties of detectives.
“We are committed to ensure we increase your capacity and enhance operations at large,” he said.
Meanwhile, Gateria Mboroki, the Commandant of the National Criminal Investigation Academy, affirmed the preparedness of the newly promoted officers to assume their new roles, attributing their readiness to the thoroughness of the training program.
Richard Mwaura, the Director of Operations at DCI, emphasized the importance of professionalism and integrity among the officers. He reminded them of the public’s high expectations for diligent service, noting that maintaining these standards would address operational gaps within the DCI.
The department faces significant demand for officers across various sections to meet operational expectations. This marks the first instance in DCI’s history where the Directorate has conducted training specifically aimed at promoting its officers. Sources within the department revealed that international training opportunities are now accessible to officers at all levels.
“We have seen many officers go for such courses and get promoted at a higher and motivating rate. This is good for the service at large,” an insider aware of the trend said.
“A number of other officers are undergoing various trainings including those on intelligence collection and analysis. This will also see them get management training and other related fields,” officials said.
Other senior officers present included the Commanding Officer Magadi Field Campus Charles Naibei, Director Training Edwin Kamau, Department Director Investigation Bureau Paul Wachira, PA to the DCI Lawrence Some among others.
