The Ministry of Interior has established a new task force on cyber security in response to public demands for government accountability and transparency in spending.
Former Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, through a gazette notice, appointed Mark Matunga as the Chairperson of the twenty-one-member task force. Their mandate spans three years starting from June 14.
The task force’s primary objectives include conducting a comprehensive review and audit of Kenya’s Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act to identify any gaps or inconsistencies and recommend specific revisions.
Additionally, they are tasked with assessing the implementation requirements of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Regulations 2024 and developing a detailed implementation plan and matrix.
Furthermore, the task force is expected to propose new policies, legal frameworks, and institutional structures necessary for effective implementation of the Act and the 2024 Regulations. They will also develop a National Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity Plan and provide technical support for the establishment of Cybersecurity Operation Centres at national, sectoral, and critical infrastructure levels.
Additionally, the task force will assist in setting up and operationalizing Cybersecurity desks at Police Posts and Stations as stipulated in the Regulations, support capacity building and training for implementation, and formulate a National Cybersecurity Policy.
