The bloc was founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2011. On January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia became full members of BRICS.
This year, Russia is serving as the chair of the association.
The main event for BRICS in 2024 will be the summit scheduled to take place in Kazan, Russia, in October.
According to Zane Dangor, the Director General of the South African Foreign Ministry, the South African government’s approach to BRICS will remain unchanged following the establishment of the national unity government. He mentioned that Pretoria is preparing for participation in the upcoming BRICS summit chaired by Russia.
Dangor emphasized that South Africa’s priority within BRICS is to ensure economic growth for the member countries.
Earlier, South African Presidential Spokesman Vincent Magwenya informed Russian media that President Cyril Ramaphosa will attend the BRICS summit in Kazan in October.
The national unity government in South Africa was formed on June 30, following elections held in May, where no party secured a parliamentary majority.
The Government of National Unity is supported by ten parliamentary parties and includes representatives from the former opposition.
