Nairobi County’s Environment Chief Officer, Geoffrey Mosiria, has indefinitely shut down a kiosk hotel due to severe hygiene issues.

The kiosk, which prepares kebabs, sausages, eggs, and smokies for distribution to small retailers and hawkers at a bus stop area, was found to have unacceptable sanitary conditions. Mosiria, accompanied by public health and environment officials, revealed disturbing evidence of the kiosk’s poor hygiene.

A video obtained by the Star showed blackened floors, dirty cooking grills, and contaminated cooking oil. Mosiria reported a strong, unpleasant odor, the presence of rats, and an overall filthy environment, all posing significant health risks.

Before deciding to close the kiosk, officials had previously warned the owner to shut down for at least a day or two for cleaning, but the owner failed to comply.

“As a result of these findings, the kiosk has been closed indefinitely until substantial improvements are made to meet Nairobi County’s strict health and safety standards,” Mosiria said.

He urged all hawkers, vendors, and food vendors to maintain high hygiene standards, noting that many city residents rely on their food. Mosiria emphasized that everyone must play a part in ensuring a clean and healthy environment.

This action serves as a stern warning to all food vendors, reflecting the county’s commitment to maintaining high hygiene standards and protecting public health. Mosiria also encouraged Nairobi residents to report any vendors who fail to maintain cleanliness.

The decisive closure underscores Governor Johnson Sakaja’s dedication to public health and safety.
