Police in Machakos County have arrested a man found in possession of a stolen mobile phone belonging to a nurse at Machakos Level Five Hospital. This arrest follows the recent apprehension of two other suspects believed to be part of a phone theft syndicate preying on patients at the facility.
The 17-year-old suspect’s actions caught up with him when security officers apprehended him with the stolen phone, which belonged to nurse Philip Mumo. The minor allegedly took the phone shortly after receiving treatment from Mumo at the Diabetes Centre.
Mumo had left his phone on his desk after attending to the patient. Within five minutes, he realized the phone was missing and immediately raised the alarm. The security team responded quickly, and after reviewing CCTV footage, they identified the patient who had just been treated by Mumo as the thief. The suspect was arrested before leaving the hospital premises and is now in police custody as investigations continue.
Machakos County Chief Officer of Public Health, Simon Simba Mwako, warned those engaging in such malicious activities, stating that they would face severe consequences. He also revealed that the hospital has tightened security measures, requiring all staff to wear identification tags. This initiative is intended to improve the management of individuals within the facility and prevent thefts targeting both medical staff and patients.
