Concerns have been raised regarding the increasing prevalence of cataracts and other eye conditions among residents in Baringo. Optician Caroline Tallam attributes many of these cases to lifestyle factors, highlighting issues such as the use of firewood and the effects of aging.
Reports indicate that approximately 2,000 new cases of cataracts are diagnosed each year. The National Eye Institute defines a cataract as a cloudy area in the lens of the eye, a condition that becomes more common with age.
Speaking at a medical camp in Baringo North, Tallam urged locals to prioritize regular eye check-ups to facilitate early detection of eye diseases. “The earlier these conditions are caught, the better so that adequate treatment can be administered,” she emphasized.
