Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed unwavering confidence in the Judiciary ahead of his impeachment hearing scheduled for Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at the National Assembly, which is led by Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Mwengi Mutuse.
During his first public appearance since the special impeachment motion was tabled, Gachagua remained optimistic, asserting that the courts would uphold the rule of law. While he did not explicitly state that he would be seeking legal recourse regarding the 11 grounds cited in the motion, his remarks hinted at the possibility.
“I have faith in our system of law. We have competent men and women in our Judiciary who I believe will uphold the constitution, protect it with their zeal, and safeguard the will of the Kenyan people,” Gachagua stated.
He emphasized, “We have a good country with a rule of law as opposed to the state of nature. I appeal to all our independent institutions to uphold the rule of law and remain true to the constitution so that we don’t find ourselves in situations where the rule of the jungle applies.”
Gachagua added, “So far, it is my observation that we have a very patriotic Judiciary, one that upholds the rule of law and the constitution and always maintains the supremacy of our constitution. I believe that Kenya will be a country governed by the rule of law.”
Maintaining Peace
In his address, Gachagua urged citizens to maintain peace and coexistence, regardless of the impeachment hearing’s outcome. He stressed the importance of preserving the principles of peaceful living and allowing democracy to unfold naturally.
Upcoming Hearing
On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, Gachagua is set to face the MPs, where he will have two hours to defend himself. Prior to his appearance or the involvement of his legal representatives, Mutuse is expected to present his case, including witnesses and supporting documents for the motion.
Following this, the MPs will vote on the impeachment motion. If it passes, Gachagua will then face the Senators, who will serve as the jury in the impeachment proceedings.
