Safaricom will be refunding the transaction fee for your first M-PESA send money transaction of the day, in celebration of their 24th anniversary. In a tweet on Wednesday, the company announced, “Asante kwa miaka 24. Get your transaction fee refunded for the first send money transaction today.”

The promotion is available for users through the M-PESA app or by dialing *344#, and Safaricom noted that “this promotion ends today.”

Earlier this year, Safaricom reported earnings of Sh139.9 billion before interest and tax for the period ending March 31, 2024. At the group level, which includes startup costs and investments in Safaricom Ethiopia, they recorded an EBIT of KES 94.9 billion, reflecting a 3.5% year-on-year growth. These results exceeded both market expectations and the group’s guidance range of Sh129 billion to Sh132 billion.

Safaricom credited this strong performance to factors like customer segmentation, digitization in the public sector, investments in new technologies, and improved data analytics for better customer service.

As part of its tradition of rewarding customers during anniversaries, Safaricom has offered various gifts. When celebrating 20 years, customers enjoyed one free call of up to 20 minutes. Notifications were sent a day prior to alert users of their free call. Additionally, customers who had been with Safaricom for 20 years received a 20GB data bundle valid for seven days. Personalized Tunukiwa voice offer buyers also got a free 20-minute call across all networks.

At that time, Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa remarked, “In the past two decades, Safaricom has grown from a telecommunication service provider to a technology company, and our customers have been a key part of this journey. We are aware that technology and a data-driven economy can further support Kenya’s economic growth, and these will be our launchpad for the next 20 years.”
