Murang’a senator Joe Nyutu has accused President William Ruto of deliberately prioritising development in Nyanza while sidelining other regions, in what he described as a politically motivated strategy to secure votes.

Speaking during an interview on Monday, September 22, 2025, Nyutu criticised what he termed the “medieval view” of national resources as personal property to be dispensed to communities that show political loyalty

National resources are meant for all Kenyans, not to be given as favours to those who please the President,” Nyutu said. “No leader should have to please President Ruto to see development in their region. It is their right, not a privilege.”

Nyutu referred to comments made by Ruto in Machakos, where the President noted that Nyanza is currently enjoying increased development projects, attributing this to the willingness of its leaders to work closely with his Kenya Kwanza administration.

“Development follows partnership when leaders come together and support the government of the day; their regions benefit. Nyanza is a clear example of what happens when we put aside politics and work for progress.”Ruto said

The Senator also pointed out Ruto’s frequent attempts to blame Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka for Ukambani development challenges.

He has previously tried to shift blame for stalled projects in Ukambani onto leaders like Kalonzo Musyoka, while praising accelerated projects in Nyanza because leaders there allegedly support him,” Nyutu added.

Nyutu warned that such selective development undermines national cohesion and accountability. “Development should not be a tool to win votes or reward loyalty. Every region has a right to progress, and leadership must respect that,” he said.

The Senator also noted concerns about Ruto’s political strategy in Nyanza, suggesting that the President’s focus on the region was tied to plans for a running mate ahead of the 2027 elections.

“It is clear that accelerated development in Nyanza is less about the people’s needs and more about creating political leverage,” Nyutu said.

He urged all Kenyans to hold the government accountable, saying that leaders across the country should be empowered to deliver services without political interference.

“Every Kenyan deserves access to resources and development regardless of political affiliation,” Nyutu concluded.
