A Catholic nun has been arrested by police in Meru County after another nun was found dead at a children’s centre in the Nkambune area.

The nun who had recently been transferred to the institution and was expected to take over its leadership is believed to be connected to the death of Sister Anselmina Karimi, 65.

Sister Karimi was the head of the Meru Children’s Centre before her death. According to police reports, the body of the deceased was discovered at her home on Sunday, October 12, 2025.

She was found lying on her back, and investigations show that she had been hit with a blunt object. Police officers visited the scene and removed the body to the mortuary pending further investigations and a post-mortem examination.

Police launch investigations

The nun was taken into police custody as officers continue gathering evidence. Imenti East Police Commander Adano Abkula confirmed the incident. The body of the late Sister Karimi is being preserved as detectives work to piece together the events leading to her death.

Not the first time nuns have made headlines

This is not the first time nuns have made news for the wrong reasons. In September 2025, a nun at Asumbi Catholic Mission in Homa Bay was caught on camera slapping a junior nun during a church service.

The video quickly went viral, sparking outrage among the public and raising questions about discipline within some religious institutions. Church officials condemned the act and promised that appropriate internal action would be taken against the nun involved.

The incident highlighted the need for better oversight and accountability in religious communities to prevent similar cases in the future. Many called for stricter monitoring of convents and training on professional conduct to ensure respect and safety among all members.
