Person of interest arrested as police seize 500 litres of Kangara in Kendu Bay

A person of interest has been arrested after police seized 500 litres of Kangara and 20 litres of Chang’aa during a raid in Rachuonyo North Sub-County.

According to a statement by the National Police Service (NPS), the operation was carried out by officers from Kendu Bay Police Station at a brewing site in Nyakwere Village, Kobuya East. The illegal alcohol was being produced for distribution and posed serious risks to the health and safety of the local community.

“Police in Rachuonyo North Sub-County have intensified their efforts to combat the production and distribution of illicit alcohol following a successful operation in the Kobuya East area. During the operation, officers from Kendu Bay Police Station raided a site in Nyakwere Village, where illicit liquor was being produced. They recovered 500 litres of Kangara and 20 litres of Chang’aa,” Police stated.

The individual is being held at Kendu Bay Police Station and will be presented in court. Police say the raid is part of intensified efforts to dismantle illegal brewing operations that continue to circulate harmful substances in the region.

The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to protecting communities from dangerous alcohol and urged residents to support the crackdown by reporting any suspicious activities linked to illicit brews.

“One suspect was arrested and is being held at the station, pending arraignment in court. The National Police Service reiterates its commitment to protecting communities from harmful substances that endanger public health and safety. Members of the public are encouraged to support the ongoing efforts against illicit brews by reporting any suspicious activities.”

Separate raid

In another operation, police in Nairobi seized more than 4,000 litres of Kangara and 10 litres of Chang’aa during a targeted raid at an illegal brewing site in Highrise.

According to the National Police Service NPS, officers from Lang’ata Police Station, led by the Station Commander, conducted the operation after receiving intelligence reports. They also recovered a full set of brewing equipment.

Investigators are pursuing leads to track down a suspect who fled during the raid.

“Yesterday, a team of police officers from Lang’ata Police Station, led by the Station Commander, conducted a targeted operation on an illegal brewing site in the Highrise area. The team seized 10 litres of Chang’aa, 4,000 litres of Kangara, and brewing apparatus. Police are following crucial leads to arrest a suspect who escaped,” the statement read in part.

The NPS reaffirmed its commitment to cracking down on illegal alcohol.

“The individual will be promptly arraigned in court upon arrest. The National Police Service remains committed to eradicating illegal brewing and ensuring public safety and security,” the authorities added.
