The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya has confirmed the arrest of two individuals in Marsabit over an illegal abortion.

In an X post on Sunday, January 4, 2026, the investigative agency said residents in Malkalakore village, Drib-Gombo, discovered a lifeless six-month-old foetus wrapped in clothing and alerted authorities, prompting a swift police response.

The agency stated that investigations quickly identified the woman believed to be the mother. She had been visibly pregnant just days earlier but was suddenly no longer so.

The DCI noted that during questioning, the woman admitted to being the mother, which led officers to an unlicensed clinic where the abortion had been performed.

“The arrests came after disturbing reports from Malkalakore village in Drib-Gombo, where residents discovered a lifeless male foetus, estimated to be six months old, wrapped in clothing. Police swiftly responded, recovering the body and transferring it to the Marsabit Referral Mortuary for preservation.”DCI said.

At the clinic, authorities found the practitioner operating without registration. A search uncovered surgical tools and assorted drugs, some stained with fresh blood. The facility was immediately shut down, and all items were seized as evidence.

Medical care and arraignment

The woman was taken to Marsabit Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention before being escorted to Marsabit Police Station along with the practitioner. Both are currently being processed ahead of their court arraignment.

Officials emphasised that quick action is crucial to prevent further medical complications and ensure accountability.

DCI has urged the public to report suspicious activities through the toll-free line.

Authorities said timely reporting can prevent tragedies and protect vulnerable individuals from unlicensed medical procedures.

DCI reaffirmed its commitment to cracking down on unlicensed clinics while ensuring that victims of such procedures receive proper medical care and protection.

The agency also emphasised the importance of seeking certified medical services and remaining vigilant against unregulated operations.

The body was recovered and transferred to Marsabit Referral Mortuary for preservation.
