Police in Isiolo County have received an AK-47 rifle and seven rounds of ammunition that were voluntarily handed over by a local resident.
The surrender is part of ongoing efforts to reduce the circulation of illegal firearms in the area.
According to a statement by the National Police Service on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, the weapon was safely secured by officers and is now in police custody. Authorities say such acts by members of the public play a crucial role in enhancing security in communities.
The police urged anyone in possession of unauthorised firearms to hand them over at the nearest police station. They also appeal to residents to assist in security operations by sharing information on illegal weapons or criminal activities in their neighbourhoods.
“Police officers in Isiolo County have received and secured an AK-47 rifle, along with seven rounds of ammunition, that was voluntarily surrendered by a member of the public. The National Police Service commends members of the public who choose to surrender illegal firearms and continues to encourage those in possession of unauthorised weapons to voluntarily present them at the nearest police station,” NPS said.
This comes days after Isiolo Police Station received an AK-47 with 20 rounds of ammunition, voluntarily surrendered by a community member at Leparua Location. The handover was facilitated by National Government Administration Officers and local elders.
The National Police Service praised the community’s role in the peaceful disarmament process, which aims to reduce illegal weapons and enhance security. Residents are encouraged to surrender any illegal firearms peacefully.
In December 2025, four individuals voluntarily surrendered illegal firearms to police at Embobut Police Station, continuing a community-driven effort to improve regional security.
This initiative, led by the National Police Service (NPS), aims to reduce armed conflict and promote peace by encouraging residents to turn in illicit weapons.
Recently, two more people handed over AK-47 rifles, one loaded with ammunition. Since the disarmament drive began, 314 illegal firearms have been recovered in the county. The NPS praised community cooperation and local leaders for supporting these efforts and urged anyone with illegal firearms to surrender them to help ensure lasting peace and safety.
