KALPA raises safety concerns over flight disruptions at JKIA

The Kenya Airline Pilots Association (KALPA) has expressed concern over ongoing flight disruptions at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and across the country’s airspace.

The disruptions have been occasioned by industrial action by members of the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU), including Air Traffic Control (ATC) personnel.

In a statement issued Tuesday, KALPA said the industrial action has led to significant operational interruptions, resulting in flight delays, diversions and cancellations that have inconvenienced passengers and stakeholders within the aviation sector.

The pilots’ association emphasized that aviation safety remains paramount despite the disruptions.

It cautioned that prolonged operational challenges could adversely affect crew scheduling and rest periods, potentially increasing the risk of fatigue among flight crews.

“Aviation safety is non-negotiable,” the association stated, insisting on the need for strict adherence to established Flight Duty Period (FDP) limitations and mandatory rest requirements.

KALPA noted that these regulatory safeguards are designed to mitigate fatigue and ensure operations remain within internationally accepted safety standards.

The association further warned that operational pressures should not be allowed to compromise safety limits under any circumstances.

While acknowledging the challenges facing the aviation sector, KALPA urged all parties involved to resolve labour disputes through constructive and good-faith dialogue.

According  to KALPA meaningful engagement is essential to address outstanding issues and secure sustainable solutions that serve both the industry and the travelling public.

The association cautioned that approaches which frustrate negotiations or entrench positions risk prolonging stalemates and deepening disruptions.
