A wave of tension and grief has rocked Moi Primary and Junior School in Nakuru after a Grade Eight pupil died under what parents described as mysterious circumstances, triggering a dramatic protest that saw mourners wheel the boy’s body from hospital to the school compound as they demanded answers.

The learner has been identified as Moses Joseph. His family said he left home on the morning of the incident in good health, only for them to later be informed that he had died.

“Nilimuamsha asubuhi na hiyo strong tea ilikuwa ready, akavaa na kuondoka,” the boy’s mother, Lillian Moraa, said, recounting the last moments she saw him alive.

Hospital officials at Nakuru Level Five Hospital said teachers from the school brought the boy to the facility but he was already dead on arrival.

After doctors confirmed the death, the teachers were advised to leave the body — which had been placed in a preservation unit — and return with a formal police notification of death.

However, before that process could be completed, the boy’s parents arrived at the hospital and wheeled the body out on a trolley, later taking it to the school in full view of members of the public.

The body remained at the school compound for more than an hour as police struggled to contain the emotional crowd. Officers later returned the body to Nakuru Level Five Hospital, but parents said they were still left without clear answers on what transpired before the pupil’s death.

Speaking to Citizen TV on phone, Nakuru County Education Director Victoria Mulili confirmed she had received a report on the incident and said investigations had been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the learner’s death.
