Gor Mahia have been dealt a significant setback following the confirmation that star defender Sylvester Owino will be sidelined for six weeks due to a muscle injury.
The development has left head coach Charles Akonnor concerned but resolute as the team navigates a critical phase of the season.
Owino was forced off during yesterday’s 3-1 win against Ulinzi Stars at Ulinzi Sports Complex after going down in visible discomfort.
The centre-back complained of acute pain and difficulty moving his leg, prompting an early substitution in the opening half.
Team Doctor Brian Odongo lconfirmed the extent of the damage after medical evaluations.
“He was referred for further evaluation where an MRI confirmed a partial tear of the lower medial gastrocnemius muscle belly,” Odongo said.
He added that the Sylvester will be out for six weeks and is currently under medication and will soon begin a structured rehabilitation program. With about two months the endof the season, Sylvester might miss the rest of the season.
Sylvester has been a commanding presence in Gor Mahia’s defence, and his absence leaves a noticeable void. In his place, Frank Odhiambo and Mike Kibwage are expected to step up and anchor the backline.
Head coach Charles Akonnor admitted the injury is a bitter blow but maintained a hopeful outlook.
“It’s a big blow to us, more so at this crucial stage of the season, but we will manage,” Akonnor stated.
“We have to find a way to navigate with the available players because they are equal to the task. We just hope for no further setbacks in terms of injuries,” added the Ghanaian coach who has led the record champions to a good league run.
With the title race heating up, Gor Mahia will now look to its squad depth to weather the storm and keep their league campaign on track.
