A few days after former President Uhuru Kenyatta asked Mt Kenya residents to reject President William Ruto’s re-election bid and cautioned voters against being swayed by political rhetoric, Kenya Kwanza leaders launched a counter-campaign in Narok County.
The campaign took place during a youth empowerment programme in Narok South Constituency, where leaders called for unity and respect for leadership transitions.
They urged the former president to retire from active politics while continuing to offer guidance as a former head of state.
“If you were elected and have now retired, respect the will of Kenyans and step back. Even the Maasai say they do not want tribalism—why should you, a former President of all Kenyans, promote it?” President Ruto’s aide, Farouk Kibet, said.
Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu added, “It is not right for you to speak in ethnic terms and tell the Kikuyu to reject President William Ruto. When you were President, we respected you. Respect Ruto as he was elected by all Kenyans.”
The leaders emphasised that Kenyatta has already played his part and should retire peacefully.
They described his recent statements as divisive and tribal, noting that during his presidency, no former head of state publicly challenged his leadership.
“Why are you not allowing President William Ruto to lead peacefully, just as former presidents retired and gave space?” Taveta MP John Bwire noted.
Kibet added, “He should remain an advisor as a retired president. We elected him as President of Kenya, not along tribal lines.”
In Kakamega County, other Kenya Kwanza leaders praised President Ruto’s leadership and ongoing development projects, calling on Kenyans to support him in the next general election.
“The President has delivered development across the country. That is why some leaders feel threatened, because development is reaching everywhere,” stated PS Interior Raymond Omollo.
Similar remarks were echoed in Kericho County, where leaders allied to the president said his opponents lack vision and continue to promote tribal politics.
“We fully support our president. Those shouting ‘one term’ are the ones without an agenda,” Kericho Governor Erick Mutai noted.
