Media personality Steve Thompson Maghana, alias Oga Obinna, has issued a strong warning to Kenyans over the rising cases of hate speech and online threats.

Amid growing concerns about toxic online spaces, Obinna stated in a video shared on his official social media accounts on Monday, April 13, 2026, that those misusing social media platforms will face consequences.

“I want to talk about goons; it is not going to be business as usual for goons. Vitu zimechange,” Obinna said.

He further drew a clear line between what he described as online goons and on-ground goons, warning that both groups are now under heightened scrutiny.

Obinna noted that online offenders are increasingly being tracked through the Cybercrime Act, with authorities quietly monitoring and building cases against individuals engaging in harmful digital behaviour.

He warned that while some may feel excited after gaining views and engagement online, investigative agencies such as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations are actively following digital footprints.

“We have two types of goons: online goons most of the time, the online goons sometimes get away with most of the things they do or say, and then we have on-ground goons,” he stated.

“Online goons sahi wankujiwa na kitu inaitwa cyber crime act basically kuna vitu sahi; ukisema online wewe unaona umepata views mingi, unaangaliwa na DCI polepole, unawekwa kwa backet, na unaanza kutafutwa polepole.”

The media personality also echoed the popular Swahili saying, “mkono wa serikali ni mrefu,” stressing that those spreading hate speech, issuing threats, or fuelling tribal animosity will eventually be held accountable, regardless of where they are.

Huwa wanasema mkono wa serikali ni mrefu, itakutoa huko penye utakuwa,” Obinna added.

Message to youth

He urged young Kenyans in particular to remain alert and responsible online, warning that many have already faced consequences while others continue to act recklessly.

According to him, many hiding behind keyboards have long operated without consequences, often spreading hate, issuing threats, and inciting tribal divisions in pursuit of attention and viral content.

“Wewe endelea kuspread HATE SPEECH, Kutuma threats, Na KUCHOCHA chuki na Tribalism using your social media. Wenzako wananyolewa chako anza kulitia maji. HAYA!!
TUSIBLEED NDIO WALEAD!! VIJANAA KUWENI RADA!! MTAKUJIWA
ONE BY ONE,” Obinna stated.
