Journalist Larry Madowo has said that many Africans support US President Donald Trump, based on his experience travelling across the continent.
While on TV on Saturday, April 18, 2026, he explained that his remarks came after he spoke, where some people disagreed with him. He maintained that his view reflects what he has seen and heard during his work.
“Many Africans love President Trump. I said that on CNN and some people accused me of lying,” Larry Madowo said.

He explained that Africa is made up of different views and opinions. However, he said his travels have exposed him to many people who openly support Donald Trump. He added that this trend has been consistent in different countries.
“Africa is not a monolith, of course, but I travel around the continent full time, and I meet more Trump fans than haters,” he said.
Larry Madowo noted that the support for Donald Trump may surprise many people. He explained that some Africans connect with certain values they believe he represents. He said this has shaped how people view him across the continent.
Reasons behind the support
“President Trump is surprisingly much beloved in Africa,” Larry Madowo said.
He explained that one of the reasons for this support is linked to social and cultural beliefs. According to him, many people in Africa hold strong religious values. He said this influences how they respond to political leaders.
“One of the reasons why President Trump is beloved in Africa is because he has a strong position,” he explained.

Larry Madowo added that some people feel Donald Trump does not support LGBTQ rights. He said this aligns with the views held by many in religious communities across Africa. He noted that this connection plays a role in shaping public opinion.
“People probably feel like he is not pro LGBTQ rights, people are religious in Africa, and so they feel like President Trump represents those conservative values,” he said.
“Obviously, President Trump has made decisions that affect Africans moving to the United States, out of visa restrictions,” Larry Madowo said.
Despite these factors, Larry Madowo said his experience still shows a pattern of support. He explained that many people he meets continue to express positive views. He said this remains noticeable during his travels.
“But overall, I think when I go round Africa, people like President Trump,” he said.
