Milele FM radio host and actress Jacquey Nyaminde has spoken out after the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority revoked certificates issued by the Kenya Institute of Management since 2018.

The decision follows claims that the institution has been offering programmes without valid approval.

The authority said in a statement on Monday, April 20, 2026, that it had found KIM awarding academic and professional courses without proper clearance. It explained that the institution does not have the mandate to issue academic qualifications, leading to the cancellation of all certificates issued over the past years.

“I feel like…naskia uchungu sana kwa wale ambao wamesoma katika hizo institutions,” Wilbroda said on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.

She explained that many students and families have invested heavily in education over the years. She said parents and guardians have struggled to pay fees, expecting valid qualifications at the end of the studies. She added that the decision has now left many in a difficult position.

“Mpaka wazazi or guardians wameng’ang’ana kulipa school fees, since 2018 up to now, those are 7 years…actually 8 years,” she said.

Impact on students and families

Wilbroda questioned why the issue took so long to be addressed. She said it is hard to understand why action is only being taken now, after several years of students completing their studies. She explained that the delay has made the situation worse for those affected.

“Why haven’t they done anything? Hii wakati yote surely?” she said.

She added that many graduates are already in the job market using the same certificates. She said the sudden announcement puts them at risk, especially those who depended on the documents to secure employment. She noted that the situation has created confusion and frustration.

“Ya kuamba saa hii unaambia ule mtoto amengangana akahitimu, akapata makaratasi yake na anatafuta nayo kazi,” she said.

Wilbroda said it is painful to tell graduates that their efforts may not count. She explained that students worked hard to complete their studies, only to face uncertainty after graduation. She urged those in charge to consider the impact of their decisions.

“Saa hii unamwambia ya kwamba, hizo makaratasi zako, they are not eligible?” she said.

She concluded by raising concern about how the matter was handled. She said there appears to have been a lack of seriousness in addressing the issue earlier. She called for accountability from those responsible.
