Former Shabana FC tactician, Peter Okidi is on the brink of a new chapter as he edges closer to being unveiled as the head coach of Mombasa United, with the club firmly targeting a historic rise to the top flight.

The highly rated tactician is set to replace Gilbert Selebwa, stepping into a role that carries the weight of expectation as Mombasa United intensify their push for promotion to the Kenyan Premier League.

Currently sitting second in the National Super League standings, level on points but with an inferior goal difference to Migori Youth, the coastal side are well within reach of a historic breakthrough making the timing of this potential appointment even more significant.

Okidi arrives with a reputation forged through resilience and tactical discipline. His most notable stint came at Shabana FC, where he engineered one of the league’s most impressive turnarounds.

Taking over a side deep in relegation trouble, he transformed them into a competitive unit that surged to a top-five finish in the 2024/25 season.

That spell was punctuated by individual recognition, including two Coach of the Month awards, and a standout February 2026 run where Shabana recorded four straight victories without conceding.

Despite a sudden departure following a dip in results, his stock remains high across Kenyan football circles.

Beyond club management, Okidi has also contributed to youth development, serving as assistant coach of Kenya’s U17 side during the AFCON qualifiers further evidence of his ability to nurture emerging talent.

For Mombasa United, this appointment signals more than a coaching change it is a statement of intent. Okidi’s hallmark defensive organization, structured build up play, and ability to revive struggling squads could prove decisive in the club’s promotion quest.
