Detectives are investigating a fatal incident involving a South Sudanese refugee who was stabbed during a fight at the Kakuma refugee camp in Turkana County. The altercation occurred on May 17 during a football match among Nuer youth, who are refugees residing in the camp.
According to police reports, the disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation involving stones and twigs. During the fracas, Maah Kim Lat, a 22-year-old resident of Kakuma Four refugee camp, was stabbed in the abdomen.
Despite being rushed to Clinic Seven Hospital, Lat succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
As of now, no arrests have been made, but police are actively investigating the incident. In response to this and other recent violent occurrences, officials are reviewing and enhancing security measures at the facility.
The Kakuma Refugee Camp has experienced a series of fatal incidents, including revenge attacks involving firearms in both the camp and the Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement.
The camp is divided into four areas—Kakuma 1, 2, 3, and 4—while the Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement comprises three villages.
Established in 1992 to accommodate the “Lost Boys of Sudan,” Kakuma Refugee Camp receives support from various agencies to ensure the welfare of its residents.
Police have emphasized the need for increased security arrangements to protect the safety of refugees, aiming to prevent further incidents and maintain order within the camp.
