A light moment occurred on Wednesday during the opening of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya International Scientific Conference in Mombasa.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua left the audience in stitches when he admitted to having struggled with reading his speech. This humorous admission came just moments before he concluded his remarks by officially declaring the conference open.
“Asante. Hii Kizungu saa zingine inatuumiza, lakini tung’ang’ana,” (This English is hurting us sometimes but we keep trying) he said amidst laughter and claps from the attendees.
“Unajua sasa… hii maisha ni kung’ang’ana, kila mtu apambane na hali yake. Wacha sisi tung’ang’ane kuongoza Kenya” (You know, this life, is about struggling, let everyone fight his own battle)
In his speech, Gachagua also expressed his regard for the health professionals in the development and well-being of the nation.
“The years you took from school to the university are not in vain, they must count for something in supporting humanity and improving the lives of Kenyans,” he said.
Pharmacists, for instance, play a critical role in the health sector saying without their support, a hospital cannot function properly.
“It does not matter how big the hospital is, how experienced the doctor is, how modern the equipment is, how clean is it, without the strong support of a working pharmacy, you don’t have a hospital,” he said.
