A video depicting a lioness scaling the perimeter wall of a home in Rongai and carrying away a black dog has sparked fear among area residents. Initially, locals were uncertain about the disappearance of their dogs, but it has now become apparent that lions frequent the area at night, launching surprise ambushes.
The 1.15-second CCTV footage captures the lioness stealthily climbing the perimeter wall before carefully surveying the area below. After a few moments, the lioness jumps into the compound and swiftly grabs the black dog in its teeth. It then lingers briefly before vanishing into the darkness.
An anonymous message circulating among residents corroborates the presence of the lioness in the area, confirming the invasion and causing heightened concern among the community.
It reads: “The animal eating our dogs is a lioness. No need to guess anymore. She was captured by my CCTV cameras at around 9pm ( exact time in the videos) at (Neighbour’s) gate and shortly later jumping over my front gate and returning carrying my Rottweiler.”
“It is painful to lose a friend who always welcomes me at the gate whenever I come back home!”
On May 16, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) issued a warning to residents of Lang’ata in Nairobi regarding three lions roaming in the area. Reports of the lions were received by KWS after they were supposedly sighted near Langata Women’s Prison in Nairobi.
In response to the reports, KWS swiftly mobilized a team to conduct a thorough search of the area. Despite extensive efforts throughout the night, the search yielded no sightings of the wild animals.
“KWS continues to monitor the situation closely and remains on high alert. Ensuring the safety of the public is our top priority,” KWS noted in a statement.
The wildlife body is yet to notify the public on whether the lions were found.
