After months of negotiations, Moscow has unveiled a significant new statue honoring Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s esteemed political leader and symbol of reconciliation. The statue, situated in a quiet corner of Moscow’s southwestern district, now stands as a testament to the enduring friendship between Russia and South Africa, and potentially other African nations.
On September 9, 2024, Moscow celebrated this cultural and historical milestone with the unveiling of the monument, recognizing Mandela’s pivotal role in the fight for human rights and liberation from colonial rule in Africa. The statue was crafted by sculptor Mikhail Baskakov and commissioned by the Russian Military-Historical Society with support from the Moscow Government. It is located at the intersection of Michurinsky Prospect and Ramensky Boulevard.
To commemorate the occasion, the Russian-African Club of Lomonosov Moscow State University produced a film that explores Mandela’s life and achievements in depth. The film portrays Mandela not only as a revered Father of the Nation and political figure but also as a symbol of resilience and courage worldwide. The film highlights Mandela’s principles of justice and goodness, which continue to inspire youth globally. Mandela, affectionately known as “Madiba” meaning “the beloved one,” is celebrated for his profound impact on both South Africa and the world.
In July 2023, coinciding with the 105th anniversary of Mandela’s birth, the Moscow House of Nationalities hosted a photo exhibition dedicated to his life and work. This exhibit featured documentary photographs that captured significant moments in Mandela’s journey, including his childhood, political activism, imprisonment, presidency, and final years.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by African ambassadors, diplomats, African diaspora leaders, Russian officials, Moscow Government representatives, and figures from various scientific, educational, public, and cultural organizations. The new statue further emphasizes Russia’s connection with South Africa and its tribute to Nelson Mandela’s enduring legacy.
