A grade two pupil drowned while fishing in a river in Cherangany, Trans Nzoia County. The child was among about 20 others fishing in a seasonal river when he fell into the water.

Kibuswo Sublocation Assistant Chief Gilbert Chepsiror reported that the child’s body had been retrieved and taken to a mortuary. The pupil was a student at Kuriot Primary School in the same area.

Chepsiror explained that many children in the area are loitering because they have been neglected. “I contacted the child’s father, and he informed me that he has been away from home for the last six months and does not know the whereabouts of his wife and children,” Chepsiror said.

He added that his office will collaborate with local authorities to arrest and charge parents who have neglected their children. “The children are left to fend for themselves and search for food because their parents have abandoned them,” Chepsiror said.

Trans Nzoia police boss Jeremiah Ole Kosiom confirmed the incident, stating that it has been reported to the police.
