Five businesspeople drowned when a lorry carrying their goods plunged into a river in Amuria District, eastern Uganda. The traders were transporting produce to Obalanga Cattle Market in Kapelebyong District on a lorry with registration number UAU 429R.
The driver lost control near Alereke Bridge, between Abia and Asamuk sub counties, causing the lorry to crash into the river. The victims were buried under the goods and died instantly. Stella Agudo, one of the survivors, suggested that the vehicle lost control due to the weight of the goods.
Five traders drowned while three others sustained severe injuries. East Kyoga Region Police commander Damalie Nasuha led the rescue operation and promised a detailed report after completing investigations. The injured victims were taken to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, while the bodies were transferred to Amuria General Hospital mortuary. This marks the third fatal accident involving lorries transporting goods to other markets.
