Kenyan research firm TIFA has revealed that 41% of Kenyans support the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, according to their latest survey. The report shows that 38% of Kenyans oppose the impeachment, with the majority of opponents coming from Gachagua’s home region, Mt. Kenya.
TIFA’s research indicates that 69% of respondents from Mt. Kenya are against the impeachment, with only 20% supporting it. In contrast, 47% of respondents from other regions back the impeachment, compared to 28% who oppose it.
Among those who support Gachagua’s removal, most cited his perceived bias and preferential treatment towards his region as their primary reason. Others pointed to poor performance and leadership (13%), abuse of office (12%), and his disagreements with President William Ruto (2%) and UDA leaders.
On the other hand, 36% of those opposing the impeachment argued that Gachagua is being unfairly targeted. Eighteen percent said he is a good leader, while 7% believe that if he is to be impeached, it should be alongside the President. Six percent called for Gachagua to be pardoned, 4% said no specific reason has been given for his impeachment, and another 4% expressed concerns that his removal could lead to national instability.
TIFA also reported that many respondents expect Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to succeed Gachagua if the impeachment goes through, with 58% of Mt. Kenya residents favoring Kindiki and 30% from other regions sharing the same view.
Other potential candidates mentioned as possible replacements include Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi (5% from Mt. Kenya), Ndindi Nyoro (5%), Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga.
TIFA’s survey was conducted from October 1 to 4, 2024, with a sample size of 1,892 Kenyans. Deputy President Gachagua, who faces 10 charges including gross misconduct, violation of the Constitution, undermining the presidency, and corruption, is set to defend himself before the National Assembly and the courts starting tomorrow.
