There was drama on Monday night in Ngurubani, Mwea, Kirinyaga County, during the retrieval of a 25-year-old man’s body from a dam after the lead diver was robbed of Ksh.6,000. The money had been given by the community to facilitate the recovery.

Kelvin Gitonga drowned on Sunday while attempting to swim across a National Irrigation Authority dam to win a Ksh.300 bet. His body was eventually retrieved by local divers, led by Danson Murango from Difathas village, around 6 p.m. after a full day of searching.

The local divers, led by Murango, were compensated with over Ksh.30,000, which was shared among six divers. However, after distributing the shares to his fellow divers, Murango was robbed of his portion by a group of youths who created confusion as police officers took charge of the body.

Residents of Ngurubani and Kamucege chased the gang of six youths who stole the money, but the diver who led the operation went home empty-handed. The incident has been reported to the Wanguru police station.
