Mara Sugar Technical Director Boniface Ambani is optimistic that his team can challenge for and win the Kenyan Premier League title in their debut season during the 2024/25 campaign. Since 2000, only Sofapaka has achieved this feat, winning the championship in 2009 during their first attempt. Ambani, who guided Mara to the National Super League title, believes his team can replicate that success.
“Definitely… my target is always to aim for the top and nothing less. The players are aware that we are entering the Premier League (FKF-PL), and whatever happens in between is in God’s hands. We want to win the league title at the first attempt and not just participate,” Ambani asserted confidently.
Additionally, Ambani dismissed reports suggesting that the team plans to hold trials to recruit new players, emphasizing that they have an effective system in place to identify talent.
“We don’t announce or call for trials to select players to join the team. If we did, we would be overwhelmed by the number of players showing up, making it difficult to identify the talents we want. Instead, we have a system where we assess players over one or two days, and if we are satisfied, we bring them into the team and move forward,” he explained.
Mara Sugar topped the National Super League table with 84 points, two points ahead of their closest rivals, Mathare United, after 38 matches. During their campaign, the sugar millers recorded 26 wins, six draws, and lost the fewest matches, tied with Mathare United and Naivas, who finished third, with six losses.
