Telecommunication services provider Airtel Kenya has announced the launch of the embedded SIM (e-SIM).

The digital SIM, which cannot be physically removed from the phone, will enable customers to access the same functionality as someone using a physical sim.

The e-SIM offers several benefits over the traditional sim cards as it is quick and simple to set up online, it is planet friendly and provides an easy extra line as you can use two numbers without needing two phones/handsets.

“With the introduction of e-SIM in Kenya, Airtel continues to stay ahead of the curve where innovation is concerned about giving customers much convenience and flexibility while championing technological advancement and creating innovative platforms and opportunities that will make life simple’’ says Airtel Africa CEO Segun Ogunsanya.

The e-SIM service is now available on the Airtel network and customers who wish to switch their current physical sim cards to e-SIM will need to ensure they have a compatible device by dialling *#06#, obtaining the required QR code and be guided through a SIM swap process by an Airtel service personnel.

Airtel’s Managing Director Ashish Malhotra says “customer expectations are changing and we are confident that our customers will quickly move to our e-SIM for what it delivers.”

“Mobile users reward digital convenience therefore as a business we shall continue enabling digital transformation to deliver the full customer experience,” said the Airtel MD.

Airtel becomes the second telco in the country to launch the e-Sim after its rival Safaricom.
