Athletics Kenya (AK) has cancelled the trials for the All Africa Games that were set for this weekend in honour of world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum who died in a car crash.

Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana died in the tragic incident that occurred along the Eldoret-Eldama Ravine road on Sunday night.

In a statement sent to newsrooms on Wednesday, AK said the two-day event that was set to be held this Friday and Saturday at the Nyayo Stadium has been cancelled with a new selection process to be announced.

“Athletics Kenya wishes to inform all athletes and the entire athletics fraternity that the Trials for African Games which were to be held on 16th and 17th February 2024 at The Nyayo National Stadium has been cancelled in honor of the late Kelvin Kiptum.” The statement read.

AK was set to use the event to pick a team to represent the country during this year’s All Africa Games slated for March 8-23 in Accra, Ghana.
