Police in Machakos have apprehended a man who allegedly r*ped a mentally-challenged old woman on Tuesday night in Mwala constituency.

The suspect identified as Joseph Muema, 45, assaulted the 77-year-old woman after sneaking into her bedroom at 11 pm.

According to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Wednesday, the victim’s son caught Muema in the act and he immediately took off.

“The son’s arrival prompted Muema to escape leading to a chase, but the reportee was overpowered by the fleeing suspect prompting him to call police for assistance,” said DCI.

Muema is said to have left behind a pair of trousers and Akala sandals which made it easy for a search team to trace him and was caught in the wee hours on Wednesday morning.

Both the victim and Muema were then escorted to Mbiuni level 4 hospital where medical tests confirmed that the assault occurred.

Muema is currently in police custody awaiting arraignment where he will be facing rape charges.
