Bunyore Starlets coach Nick Aketch is confident that his revamped squad is capable of contending for the Kenya Women Premier League (KWPL) title this season. Having taken over from Timothy Ondeko, Aketch acknowledges that his main focus is talent development, despite the fierce competition in the league.
Aketch admitted that the team’s significant overhaul, which left only 20% of last season’s players, presents a challenge. However, he remains optimistic due to the raw talent within the new roster. “I’m working with raw talent after a major overhaul, but it’s an exciting project. The previous players and technical bench left, so we’re starting fresh,” said the former Kisumu Allstars coach.
He added that management has already brought in new players to fill the void, and his job is to help them reach their full potential. “Bunyore Starlets fans should expect a new playing style that emphasizes building from the back, unlike the power play they were used to,” Aketch explained.
Looking ahead, Aketch is determined to secure victory this weekend in their match against Nakuru Queens. His broader goal for the season is for Bunyore Starlets to finish among the top three teams. He also highlighted his ambitions for continental competitions, urging players to process their travel documents in anticipation.
“I’m confident we can soon feature in continental games, and I expect three to five players from this squad to earn national team call-ups,” Aketch added, expressing confidence that his team could “surprise many.”
Kenya Police Bullets are the reigning KWPL champions.
