A young Kenyan pilot who had only just earned his wings was killed in a training aircraft crash barely four weeks after his graduation ceremony, leaving his family and community in devastating grief.
Captain Alex Oluka, who grew up in Kolait Village in Teso North, spent years working towards a career in aviation after excelling academically at Kolanya Boys High School, where he attained a Grade A Plain.
Dream Years in the Making
His performance earned him support from the Teso North NG-CDF, which contributed approximately KSh 10 million towards his pilot training, a significant communal investment in a young man his family had pinned their hopes on.
On August 22, Alex graduated from the Kenya School of Flying, marking the end of a long and determined journey from a humble rural background to the cockpit.
His dedication during training earned him a role as a flight instructor, giving him not only a career but also the chance to begin repaying the faith his family and community had placed in him.
For those who had watched and supported his journey, the graduation was not simply a personal milestone.
It represented the possibility of a transformed future for an entire family that had sacrificed and waited through years of training.
Life Cut Short
That future lasted less than a month. On September 18, Alex was conducting a training flight in Kipeto, Kajiado West, when the aircraft came down.
He sustained injuries in the crash and died while being transported to hospital. The student pilot he was instructing also lost his life in the accident.
Police indicated that preliminary findings suggested poor visibility caused by morning mist may have played a role, though investigations remain ongoing.
The timing of his death has made the loss particularly raw for those who knew him. Alex had crossed every milestone: the years of study, the rigorous training, the qualification, and the first professional role.
He stood at the very beginning of the career that was meant to open new doors for his family back in Teso North.
Family Left With Unanswered Questions
At the family home in Kolait Village, the grief carries a weight beyond ordinary loss. Alex was more than a young professional building his own path.
He was a son whose success held the promise of better opportunities for the people who loved and supported him, and that promise has now been extinguished.
