Preparations for the 14th edition of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Games are complete, with parliaments from Tanzania, Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda, EALA, and host Kenya confirming their readiness.
With the games set to begin on Saturday, December 7, in Mombasa, South Sudanese parliamentarians are yet to arrive in the Coastal town for the games. They have, however, confirmed their participation, according to the event’s steering committee.
On Thursday, the steering committee, led by Mwala MP Vincent Musyoka “Kawaya,” inspected the facilities designated for the games.
Musyoka expressed confidence in Kenya’s preparedness, noting that most venues were ready, with minor final touches underway.
“We are ready. Only a portion of the running track at Mbaraki Stadium remains incomplete, but by tomorrow, Friday, everything will be ready,” Musyoka stated.
The venues include:
Mbaraki Stadium: Athletics, soccer, and tug-of-war.
Mombasa Sports Club: Additional soccer matches.
Aga Khan Academy: Indoor games.
To avoid Mombasa’s intense midday heat, the games will be scheduled for the morning hours.
The committee has ensured smooth logistics for the event, capitalizing on Mombasa’s reputation as a tourism hub. Hotels have been secured for all delegates, and medical arrangements are in place.
“We have the best hotels reserved for the parliamentarians and negotiated favourable rates. Additionally, we’ve arranged for hospitals to provide quality medical care, with insurance coverage recognized across all participating countries,” Musyoka added.
Kakooza James, an EALA representative on the organizing committee, lauded Kenya’s commitment to regional unity.
“Kenya has played a key role in fostering East African integration. We expect these games to strengthen our bonds further and provide a memorable experience for all delegates,” he said.
Kakooza also encouraged Mombasa residents to attend and witness their leaders in action.
“This is an opportunity to see figures like Speaker Wetang’ula participating. I urge everyone to come out and support,” he added.
Major (Rtd) Kirungu Majiba, head of security for Kenya’s National Assembly, assured tight security at all venues.
“Security is very tight. We’ve collaborated with the Mombasa County and National governments to ensure safety. There will be designated screening points at all facilities. We welcome residents to cheer on their MPs,” Majiba said.
Mjiba, however, noted that only Members of Parliament are allowed to participate in the games, with digital verification systems in place to prevent unauthorized entries.
The games will officially open on Saturday, December 7, at Mama Ngina Waterfront, with President William Ruto presiding over the event.
The EALA Games aim to foster regional integration and camaraderie through sports, underscoring the importance of unity among East African legislators.
