A sombre mood engulfed Kakrao Village in Migori County on Friday as family, friends, and community members gathered to lay to rest Georgina Aluoch, a student at Alliance Girls High School, who tragically lost her life after sustaining severe burn injuries during a holiday.
Georgina had been on vacation in Mombasa with her mother, Joyce Ongombe, when a boiler explosion in their rented apartment left both of them seriously injured.
Joyce sustained 40% burns, while Georgina suffered 65% burns. The two were later airlifted to Nairobi for specialized treatment, but tragically, Georgina succumbed to her injuries while her mother remained hospitalized.
The late Georgina, the only surviving child of Joyce Ongombe, was fondly remembered as a bright, loving, and outgoing young girl.
Her death has been described as shocking and untimely by teachers, classmates, and relatives, leaving the entire community in deep mourning.
Joyce, still recovering in hospital, was unable to attend her daughter’s burial but followed the proceedings virtually.
Georgina had been her only child, following the heartbreaking loss of her husband and two other children in a flood 15 years ago.
