Bangladesh’s Chief Justice and central bank governor have resigned, officials confirmed on Saturday, as student protests that led to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s departure escalate to include more officials appointed during her administration.
Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan stepped down after students warned him of “dire consequences” if he did not comply, according to a law ministry official who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Attempts by Reuters to reach Hassan were unsuccessful.
Abdur Rouf Talukder, the Governor of Bangladesh Bank, has also submitted his resignation, although it has not yet been accepted due to the significance of the role, as reported by finance ministry adviser Salehuddin Ahmed. Reuters was unable to contact Talukder for comment.
Earlier this week, four deputy governors were compelled to resign after being accused of corruption by a group of 300 to 400 bank officials.
Hasina has been in hiding in New Delhi since Monday, following an uprising that resulted in approximately 300 fatalities, many of whom were students, marking the end of her 15-year uninterrupted rule in the South Asian nation of 170 million people.
