The Judiciary of Kenya is in mourning following the sudden death of Hon. Bernard Kipyegon Rugut, a dedicated Principal Magistrate at the Molo Law Courts. Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya, Martha Koome, announced the tragic news, expressing her condolences to Rugut’s family, friends, colleagues, and the broader Judiciary community.

His passing comes just days after Chief Justice Koome also announced the death of Zena Atetwe Rashid Jalenga, a Resident Magistrate at the Milimani Commercial Court.

Hon. Rugut began his judicial journey on July 13, 2012, when he was appointed as a Resident Magistrate at Bondo Law Courts. His commitment to justice and fairness led to a steady rise through the ranks of the Judiciary. Over the years, he served in various capacities, including at the Ndhiwa and Kericho Law Courts, where he was known for his professionalism, fairness, and diligence.

In May 2023, Rugut was appointed Principal Magistrate at Molo Law Courts, further demonstrating his dedication to upholding the law and providing justice to the communities he served. His career exemplified a strong sense of duty, and he consistently worked to ensure that justice was not only achieved but also perceived as being delivered fairly.

Throughout his distinguished career, Hon. Rugut earned a reputation for exemplary service within the Judiciary. Colleagues and those who appeared before him praised his calm and measured approach to legal matters, noting his sense of fairness, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to upholding the law.

Chief Justice Koome remarked that Rugut’s passing is a loss not only to his family but also to the Judiciary and the communities he served. His dedication to making justice accessible to all was steadfast, and his legacy will continue to inspire many within the Judiciary.

Outside of his professional life, Rugut was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Purity Koskey Rugut, who also serves as a magistrate at Kabarnet Law Courts, and their children. The couple shared a deep commitment to their careers in the Judiciary, tirelessly working together to uphold justice.
