Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers in Isiolo County have halted their duties in solidarity with educators nationwide, demanding increased pay from the government. Demonstrations took place in Isiolo town on Monday, May 13, 2024, with teachers rallying outside the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) directors’ office, accusing the government of failing to comply with court orders.

Kimwere Moses, KUPPET Secretary General in Isiolo County, emphasized the need for TSC to adhere to the court order from the employment and labor relations court. He announced a two-day notice issued to TSC, followed by potential legal action for contempt of court. Among their grievances, teachers expressed frustration over house levy deductions despite lacking medical coverage.

Kimwere advocated for a basic salary increase to over Ksh70,000 for JSS teachers, considering many hold degrees. Murithi Earnest highlighted the overdue internship terms, despite promises of permanent and pensionable terms from the government. He also criticized reports of politicians distributing employment letters for JSS teachers at political events. Charity Kianira emphasized the harsh working conditions in counties like Isiolo, stating that teachers would not return to work without confirmation of permanent and pensionable terms.
