A team of detectives has been dispatched to Lumakanda, Kakamega County, to track down a gang responsible for attacking and killing a night guard during a robbery at a restaurant.
The gang also seriously injured another guard who responded to the victim’s screams. The injured guard is currently in serious condition at the hospital following the incident on Wednesday, June 12, according to police.
The body of 43-year-old David Ekai was discovered outside the main entrance of the restaurant, showing multiple wounds. Police reported that an unknown number of assailants attacked Ekai, broke into the restaurant, and stole assorted alcoholic beverages valued at KES 1.2 million.
Ekai managed to raise an alarm, alerting a neighbor who came to his aid but was also attacked and seriously injured. The injured neighbor was admitted to Lumakanda County Hospital in fair condition. Ekai’s body has been moved to Webuye County Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Locals have expressed concerns about the rising crime rate and called for action. The police team sent to Lumakanda has been instructed to apprehend the gang and bring them to justice.
In another incident in Mararal, Samburu County, police are searching for a rider who abandoned his motorcycle after a robbery.
The rider had transported a passenger from Mararal Township to the Shabaa area when he revealed himself as a robber, brandishing a sword and demanding cash and valuables. During the confrontation, the rider stole KES 20,000 and a mobile phone from the passenger. The victim fought back, causing the rider to flee on foot, leaving his motorcycle behind.
The victim sustained a knee injury during the struggle.
An operation in the area led to the arrest of two suspects, and police are continuing to search for more individuals connected to the robbery incidents. The ongoing operations are specifically targeting riders in the region, according to police.
